Effect of small solar PV systems on peak demand

Ausgrid’s demand management and energy efficiency team looked at the effect of small solar PhotoVoltaic (PV) connections on peak demand across the Ausgrid electricity network in 2010.

The analysis was done as part of a submission to the review into Solar Feed-in tariffs in NSW conducted by the NSW Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal.

The findings suggested that small solar PV had a small effect on reducing summer peak demand on the electricity network.  Despite the rapid uptake of rooftop solar under the NSW Solar Bonus Scheme, the amount of peak demand reduction was not significant enough to contribute to any potential deferral of network investment.
