Ferncourt Public School in South Marrickville has a new outdoor classroom made from the sandstone cellar of a long forgotten 19th century mansion.
The sandstone slabs were part of a cellar in The Warren, a gothic style mansion that once stood in Marrickville. The building had many different uses, including a base for soldiers during World War I before being modified into housing for returned servicemen. The building was later demolished and the land subdivided.
During excavation for the Beaconsfield to Kogarah cable project, Ausgrid uncovered the sandstone relics when contractors were trenching in a residential street. Ausgrid obtained a heritage permit to remove the slabs and identify a new location for the relics. The 28 stones were accepted by the nearby Ferncourt Public School where they established an outdoor classroom for their students.
