Nelson Bay Power Upgrade Project

Ausgrid is approaching completion of a major upgrade of the electricity network for the Port Stephens area to meet the demands of a thriving tourism industry and population growth.

The upgrade includes construction of new zone substations at Raymond Terrace, Nelson Bay (Tomaree), Medowie, and Tomago and an upgrade to the capacity of Tanilba Bay zone substation.

A new subtransmission substation (STS) is also proposed for development a site on Jessie Rd, Anna Bay.

New Raymond Terrace zone substation

Ausgrid has completed construction and commissioning of a new  zone substation at Raymond Terrace.

The new facility was required to secure supply for the Raymond Terrace area by replacing the old Raymond Terrace substation which was constructed in 1955. Ageing assets at this substation meant a replacement was the most cost effective option to ensure security of supply for the area.

The new substation is situated adjacent to the old on Masonite Road, Heatherbrae.

Tomaree zone substation

Ausgrid has completed construction of a new zone substation on Nelson Bay Road, Nelson Bay. Known as Tomaree zone substation, this new facility was commissioned in late 2012.

The new facility is required to secure supply for the Nelson Bay area and will supplement the existing Frost Road zone substation and a recently upgraded Tanilba Bay zone substation is supplying the peninsula’s demands.
