Ausgrid will soon start work on the renewal of New Lambton zone substation to enable Ausgrid to maintain a safe and secure supply to our customers in this area. The image above is an artist's impression of the refurbished new Lambton zone substation when complete.
The New Lambton zone substation was built in 1970 and supplies New Lambton, Lambton, North Lambton, and parts of Elermore Vale. Apart from residential and commercial customers in those areas, it also supplies Hunter and New England Area Health’s John Hunter Hospital campus.
The project would replace the existing 11,000 Volt switchgear with a new indoor switch room. This would allow Ausgrid to retire electrical equipment that is approaching the end of its service life and maintain a reliable power supply.
The new building will be constructed on land to the west of the existing substation yard.
New power lines
New 11,000 Volt power lines will be installed along a section of Lookout Road between the Russell Road intersection, and a location near the vicinity of Jacaranda Drive (which is the second access to the hospital campus) as part of this work. Please click here for a proposed route map.
Construction is scheduled to start in third quarter of 2014.
Ausgrid is the approving authority for these works under the NSW Environmental Planning & Assessment Act. This project will be assessed under the State Environment Planning Policy (Infrastructure) 2007 (ISEPP). As part of the planning and approval process, Ausgrid is preparing an environmental assessment and is liaising with councils and other authorities.
The environmental assessment will consider input from the community, council and any other relevant authorities. This will include notifications to Newcastle City Council and adjacent land occupiers, as required under the relevant NSW Planning legislation.
Ausgrid welcomes feedback from interested community members as part of our planning and assessment process and at any stage of the project. Consultation with Roads Maritime Services (RMS), Hunter Area Health and residents in the vicinity of the site has already started and will continue during the construction and equipping phases of the project.
If you have any questions or comments about the project, please contact us any time (see project contacts at top right).
This work will involve the construction of new poles, replacement poles and new power lines which will be required on both sides of Lookout Road. Vegetation clearing will be required to achieve the required safety clearances from existing and new power lines.
There may be some interruptions to the local electricity supply while the existing power lines are transferred to the new poles. Affected members of the community will be advised in advance of any interruption, with dates and expected times for the interruption.
Like any construction work, the project would involve noise and dust, and potential temporary traffic and parking disruptions near to the substation sites, which we would work to minimise as much as possible.
Normal construction hours are between 7am and 6pm on weekdays and between 8am and 1pm on Saturdays. Work may be occasionally be planned outside of these hours, such as to meet traffic requirements for large delivery vehicles. Ausgrid will notify neighbours in advance of any work planned after normal construction hours.
