Ausgrid customers in Newcastle and the Lower Hunter will benefit from improved responses to local power outages thanks to a new depot at Beresfield.

The project is part of a wider investment program to cater for the future demand on the electricity network from population growth.

Ausgrid CEO Richard Gross was on hand this morning to officially open the Beresfield site.

“This purpose-built facility has been designed to bring our teams together so they can work more efficiently and for our customers that means we will be able to provide improved responses during emergencies.

The depot will provide our employees with a new, modern and fit for purpose facility to better support our customers right across the Lower Hunter and Newcastle

The site on Weakleys drive was chosen as it is strategically located close to major roads and the New England Highway to enable crews to respond rapidly.

“A century ago this site was home to a Hunter coal mine and now it will once again be a key part of the network helping power homes and businesses across the region’, he said.

80 staff from Maitland and Rutherford have relocated to Beresfield. The Rutherford depot was opened in 1965 and has reached the end of its working life.

Construction of the new depot started in February 2018 and was completed by October 2018.
