Reading an electricity meter

Your house may have a different electricity meter with dials.

Activity: Reading an electricity dial meter at home

  • Ask an adult to find the meter box and check it's safe. Be careful not to touch anything!
  • Stand directly in front and read each dial, writing down the numbers from right to left
  • When a dial points between two numbers, write down the lower of the two. If it points between 0 and 1, write down 0, but if it points between 9 and 0, write down 9.
  • While you are at the switchboard, ask an adult to identify the safety switch/es and test to see if it operates correctly.
