New transformer delivered for Turramurra

Ausgrid crews have successfully completed a complex operation to replace an electricity transformer at the Turramurra zone substation on Sydney’s Upper North Shore.

The 37-tonne new transformer will help secure a more reliable electricity supply for around 10,500 homes and businesses.

The old transformer commissioned in 1968, had been in service for 52 years and had reached the end of its working life.

Multiple teams worked around the clock in a carefully planned operation to dismantle the old transformer and prepare it for removal from site on Turramurra Avenue.

Precision manoeuvring was required to move the giant equipment onto the Pacific Highway and guide it safely under nearby overhead powerlines to be taken away to be scrapped.

At the same time the replacement transformer began its journey from an Ausgrid site at Flemington to Turramurra.

The upgrade is one of the critical jobs Ausgrid is continuing to carry out during the COVID-19 pandemic.
