New transformer to improve reliability and reduce noise

Ausgrid has delivered a new transformer to the Newport zone substation on Bardo Road which will reduce noise from the site and improve reliability for customers.

Safety crews escorted the truck carrying the 30 ton transformer to ensure it could pass safely underneath local powerlines.

Chief Operating Officer Trevor Armstrong said the project is part of a wider program to replace infrastructure across the network. “The old transformer was installed in 1966 and needed to be replaced as it had reached the end of its working life.

“Residents had also raised concerns about noise generated by the old equipment but once the new transformer is commissioned it will be much quieter”, Mr Armstrong said.

The Newport zone substation supplies electricity to 6,500 local homes and businesses and can also provide backup supply for other nearby areas including Avalon, Mona Vale and Careel Bay.
