Climate Change

Ausgrid provides active leadership in the transition to affordable and cleaner energy choices for our customers. We are playing an active role in making sure our network has the resilience to meet the risks and opportunities from climate change and continues to provide an affordable, reliable and sustainable service to our customers.

As a responsible and sustainable energy solutions business, Ausgrid accepts that human influence on the climate system is clear, that warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and that climate change will amplify existing risks and create new risks for natural and human systems. Ausgrid is committed to implementing actions that address climate change and is playing its part to reduce impacts on its customers and communities.

Our Actions

To manage our long-term carbon risks and opportunities and support national and international climate goals, we are taking the following actions:


Minimising our own carbon footprint

  • Set a target and publicly report our progress to hold ourselves accountable and lower our greenhouse gas emissions
  • Increasing the use of renewables in our properties through generation from our own solar panels
  • Set an internal cost of carbon to assess alternatives, particularly for SF6

 

Supporting our customers to transition to a low carbon economy

  • Make it easy for customers to connect sustainable energy to the network
  • Trial and support community solar and batteries to improve access to sustainable energy for all
  • Preparing our network so that it can assist the change in the Australian vehicle fleet to electric
  • Develop the capability for our customers to participate in the DER market with them supplying energy into the grid
  • Reduce the carbon footprint of line losses through the encouragement of renewable energy on the grid

 

Mitigating Climate change risks

  • Having our network prepared for the start of bushfire season each year
  • Maintaining the ability to quickly respond and restore service after extreme weather events
  • Maintaining a resilient grid that can manage high stress periods during heat waves and other extreme weather events

 

Engaging constructively and transparently with customers and stakeholders

  • Engaging constructively and transparently with customers and stakeholders
  • Reporting transparently on our progress in our annual Corporate Sustainability review
  • Supporting the achievement of aligned UN Sustainable Development Goals
