Managing asbestos safely

Ausgrid has strict guidelines covering the management and safe removal of asbestos from our network and operations.

The use of asbestos was commonplace as a building material until the late 1980s. In the electricity industry, it had a variety of uses, such as insulation for electrical wiring, known as cable bandages, in fire doors as well as in underground pit covers, electrical backing boards, cement sheeting and tiles.

Ausgrid has been working for more than 15 years identifying the exact areas where asbestos is present around its electricity network and to safely removing it. An asbestos register details the status of known asbestos in all forms throughout the Ausgrid’s electricity network and other Ausgrid properties.

Ausgrid manages the risk posed by asbestos in its workplace via an Asbestos Safety Management Plan, the Ausgrid asbestos register and its documented safe work processes.

Members of public who have questions about Ausgrid’s asbestos removal programs should contact the Asbestos Management Unit on (02) 9394 6961.

For contractors working on Ausgrid’s assets, you can request a copy of the asbestos register for the site by contacting the Project Manager for the job or alternately you can email with the site and project manager’s details.

Asbestos E-Learning

With the support of WorkCover NSW and industry representatives, Networks New South Wales has developed a freely available asbestos e-learning package for electrical workers providing important information on:

  • What is asbestos
  • The health risks associated with exposure to airborne asbestos
  • Where asbestos containing materials may be found in the electrical industry
  • The safety controls that minimise the risk of asbestos exposure
  • Examples of real life electrical work situations involving asbestos
