Ausgrid is redeveloping the Canterbury subtransmission substation, which is the major electricity supply point for the region.

The substation, which is located at 16A Hansen Avenue in Earlwood, was built in 1961 and equipment there is due to be replaced to enable Ausgrid to maintain a safe and reliable power supply for the area.

Construction of the new substation building has been completed and work to install the new electrical equipment within the building is finished.

Ausgrid is now working to progressively connect the new equipment to the electricity network and retire the old equipment from service.

The process of connecting the new equipment to the existing network will be done progressively as connection of cables in the substation yard needs to be done outside times of peak usage so that equipment can be removed from service without impacting on the security of the community's electricity supplies.

Once all of the new equipment is in service, the redundant equipment will be removed from the site. This removal work is scheduled to occur in 2017.
