The Sydney Harbour Tunnel is currently supplied by 11kV cables from two substations, one in North Sydney and the other in Crows Nest. On two separate occasions, unplanned power outages have affected both substations simultaneously. This has resulted in the temporary closure of the tunnel and major traffic disruptions.
To reduce the likelihood of future outages, we are planning to provide a backup power supply to the Sydney Harbour Tunnel.
Subject to road permit approvals, pre-construction activities are expected to start in January 2019. This work will involve investigations along the cable route to assess ground conditions and to confirm the location of existing underground utility services.
Following the completion of site investigations, construction to install the new cables will begin. We anticipate the project will be completed in mid-2019.
Ausgrid started engaging with key stakeholders, such as North Sydney Council, in 2017 to obtain feedback on the proposed cable route.
Ausgrid will continue to engage with the community and stakeholders during each stage of the project. We welcome questions or comments about the project at any time (see project contacts top right). Community feedback assists us to identify all potential issues and address them in our construction plans to minimise impacts.
Ausgrid is holding an information session to provide an opportunity for residents and businesses to find out more about the project and speak with the project team. No appointment is necessary, just drop in.
