Testimonial from a former Bright Spark Alumni

Rusty Glen, Apprentice Development Officer – Lineworker

Apprentice testimonial - RustyAfter realising university wasn’t for me and with my mother’s encouragement, I applied for an Lineworker Apprenticeship in 2004 but was unsuccessful. I tried again in 2005 and was accepted. From the start, I knew it was the right fit, combining hands-on training with the physical activity I enjoy. One of my most memorable moments was during the Pasha Bulka Storm Response in 2007, where I worked 8 x 16-hour days repairing network damage. Other highlights include helicopter pole replacements and assisting with recovery in New Zealand after Cyclone Gabrielle.

The best part of being a Lineworker is the variety of challenges we face, like reconductoring a 300m gully crossing, which required creative solutions and teamwork. The best advice I’ve received is, ‘If you ever get the chance to climb a pole, take it!’ This has stayed with me throughout my career. Being a Lineworker has not only given me practical skills but also taught me patience, problem-solving, and how to work effectively with different people.

My advice to new apprentices: 'You’ve gotta want it! Don’t let it beat you!’ Live by this, and nothing will stop you from reaching your goals.
