What is an electricity network?

Electricity networks own and manage the high and low voltage network of 'poles and wires' that deliver electricity to your home or business. They are responsible for the quality and reliability of your power supply.

Every resident in NSW lives within a defined electricity distribution area. For example, if you live in Balmain or Newcastle, your electricity network distributor is Ausgrid; however if you live in Parramatta or Wollongong, your electricity network distributor is Endeavour Energy.

All electrical distributors including Ausgrid charge energy retailers a use of system fee which is passed onto the customer, for the use of the electrical network infrastructure. The amount charged to customers for the use of the electrical network is regulated by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER).

How is that different to an energy retailer?

Your energy retailer sells you the electricity (and gas) for your home or business and bills you for what you use. Residential customers in NSW can choose their energy retailer.
