Belrose Cable Replacement Project

Electrical cables on spools
Ausgrid is to replace aging underground cables along Ralston Avenue Belrose, between Elm Avenue and the Western Lookout.

Project details

Ausgrid is replacing the existing fluid-filled underground 132kV sub-transmission cables between the Belrose Transition Point on Ralston Avenue and the intersection of Ralston Avenue and Elm Avenue, continuing through to the Transgrid Sydney East substation. This infrastructure supplies electricity to an existing customer base of 48,000 within the Ku-ring-gai region which includes three hospitals and many schools.

Community Consultation

In addition to consultation with the landowner and the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council, the Ausgrid Project Team hosted community information sessions in Belrose for the local community to learn more about the proposed works and provide feedback. Newsletters have been distributed to the local community, and we keep our project status up to date on this page.

Timeline

  1. Late 2025 - Mid 2027

Construction to be completed in stages:

    - Site preparation

    - Complete works inside the brick enclosure at the Ralston Lookout to connect replacement cables

    - Connect cables to existing overhead network

  2. Late 2027

What to expect during construction

Residents will be kept informed of all scheduled works through notification letters providing details on scheduled works.  The notification will include details on the work that will take place, any temporary impacts, and the steps being taken to minimise disruption throughout the work.

Project benefits

The current cables are reaching the end of their serviceable life and require replacement to safely provide energy to the community.

Planning pathway

Under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, Ausgrid is the determining authority for this project. As part of the REF process, an environmental assessment (known as a Review of Environmental Factors, or REF) has been prepared to assess the potential environmental impacts associated with the decommissioning of the existing cable and installation, operation, and maintenance of the new cable.
