Ausgrid upgrades power supply for Australia’s largest airport
After more than 50 years of powering Australia’s largest Airport, Ausgrid’s old ‘Sydney Airport’ Substation built in 1969 had its last day of service, to make way for a brand-new facility with upgraded infrastructure.
Head of Major Projects Daniel Sartor said the new substation is now switched on and ready to meet the airport’s needs well into the future, as the city continues to grow.
“There are many elements involved in a project like this, from planning and engineering through to the practical application of transmission jointing and system control operations.” he said.
With cutting-edge technology at its core, our new substation reduces environmental impact, lowers fire risk, and delivers a more resilient power supply for the Airport.
“The final piece of the puzzle is in place as transformers and switchgear are commissioned – which sees the substation operational, allowing the airport to shift its customer loads over to a more resilient supply for the future.
“Every day we are maintaining our network which supplies power to millions of homes and businesses, but it’s projects like this that are really special.” He said.
Sydney Airport Group Executive Planning and Delivery, Paul Willis, said every improvement behind the scenes ultimately benefits the millions of people who travel through Sydney Airport each year.
"A reliable power supply is critical to keeping our operations running smoothly, from runway lighting to terminal services."
This new substation will support future expansion and help us deliver a safe, efficient and sustainable experience for travellers.
The new substation, designed exclusively to power Sydney Airport, features advanced redundancies and state-of-the-art protection systems – ensuring a safer, more reliable and environmentally responsible energy supply for one of Australia’s most critical transport hubs.
