How to get connected
Getting electricity connected — or changing an existing connection — doesn’t have to be complicated.
Step-by-step process
Getting electricity connected — or changing an existing connection — doesn’t have to be complicated.
Check your location and connection
Are you in Ausgrid’s area?
Ausgrid supplies electricity across Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter region.
If you’re not sure, you can check using our postcode lookup.
If you’re outside our area, your local electricity distributor (such as Endeavour Energy or Essential Energy) will be able to help instead.
Are you already connected?
If your property has an electricity meter but the power is off, you usually don’t need a new connection.
In this case, contact an electricity retailer to have the supply turned on.
Think about what you need
Before applying, it helps to understand:
- Whether this is a new connection or a change to an existing one
- What you’re building or installing
- Whether your project is simple or more complex
Most customers choose to work with a licensed electrician, who can help:

- More complex projects may need additional work, which we’ll discuss with you.
Once the details are agreed, your connection terms are confirmed so work can begin.

To complete your connection, you’ll normally need:
- An electrician to do electrical work on your property
- Ausgrid to finalise the network connection
