How to get connected

Getting electricity connected — or changing an existing connection — doesn’t have to be complicated.

Step-by-step process

Getting electricity connected — or changing an existing connection — doesn’t have to be complicated.

Check your location and connection

Are you in Ausgrid’s area?

Ausgrid supplies electricity across Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter region.

If you’re not sure, you can check using our postcode lookup.

Check your network area

If you’re outside our area, your local electricity distributor (such as Endeavour Energy or Essential Energy) will be able to help instead.

Are you already connected?

If your property has an electricity meter but the power is off, you usually don’t need a new connection.

In this case, contact an electricity retailer to have the supply turned on.

If your plans change

Connection approvals are valid for a limited time If your project is delayed, you may need to reapply. Letting us know early helps avoid rework.

Who’s involved?

  • Ausgrid – manages the electricity network
  • Electricity retailers – provide your meter and energy supply
  • Electricians – carry out electrical work at your property

Each plays a role in getting your power connected safely.

Need extra help?

If you’re unsure where to start or what option applies to you:

  • Talk to your electrician
  • Or contact Ausgrid for guidance before applying

Early conversations can save time and money later.
