Australia’s energy transition should prioritise the best interests of all Australians. By putting customers first, distribution networks can deliver the infrastructure needed for a cleaner, more reliable and affordable energy system.

Our grid initiatives focus on improving efficiency, ensuring reliability, adopting renewable energy solutions, and innovating smart grid technologies. Our aim is to ensure every customer benefits, including those who can’t install solar, batteries or home EV chargers because they rent, live in apartments or lack off-street parking.

As the grid is a shared asset, it's important that costs and benefits are shared fairly. That’s why we are delivering solutions like community batteries and kerbside EV charging to ensure no one is left behind and everyone can participate in the energy transition.

To accelerate the clean energy transition we also recognise that a skilled and engaged workforce is vital to deliver for our customers and for the long-term success of our business. Our teams are innovating for the future, to ensure were solving the needs for tomorrow. We’re constantly looking for smarter ways to ensure the grid will continue to meet the evolving energy needs of our customers for generations to come.

Powering communities for over a century

With more than 100 years of experience, Ausgrid has built and maintained a complex electricity network that connects homes and businesses every day. Ausgrid continues to evolve, now focusing on sustainable energy solutions and future-ready infrastructure.

Largest distributor on east coast

Ausgrid is the biggest electricity distributor on Australia’s east coast, serving over 1.8 million customers and more than 4 million people across Sydney, the Central Coast, and the Hunter region. The network spans 22,275 square kilometres and includes substations, powerlines, underground cables, and poles.

Driving a greener future

Ausgrid is investing in renewable energy initiatives like community batteries and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. These projects are part of its commitment to modernising the grid and supporting Australia’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

Focused on network innovation

As we move away from fossil fuels, increase our reliance on renewables and see more consumers embracing rooftop solar, home batteries and electric vehicles, the way we think about energy is changing.
We are modernising its electricity network with smart technologies that improve reliability and efficiency. Initiatives like grid automation and real-time monitoring help reduce outages and support the integration of renewables into the energy mix.

Sharing the benefits

As the grid is a shared asset, it's important that costs and benefits are shared fairly. That’s why we are delivering solutions such as community batteries and kerbside EV charging to ensure no one is left behind and everyone can participate in the energy transition.

  • With 15 community batteries rolled out across the network, and 37 in the pipeline, over 150,000 people are eligible to share in the benefits of local solar and battery storage through Energy Storage as a Service, saving customers up to $200 a year, without needing to buy their own solar panels or home batteries.
  • We are piloting kerbside EV charging on power poles across our network to provide wider access to EV charging across our communities.

Delivering for customers - the role of distribution network operators

With modelling from Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) showing energy consumption is set to double by 2050,  distribution networks need to evolve to keep up with the role electricity plays in the lives of our customers and an increasingly de-centralised, two-way electricity distribution system.

At Ausgrid we are innovating to deliver a faster, cheaper and fairer energy transition. Not everyone can install solar panels, home batteries, or buy an electric vehicle. So by providing simple, affordable, local solutions that everyone in the community can share the benefits from, we’re committed to ensuring no one is left behind.
