Upgrading the network for a safer, more reliable energy future

Ausgrid is responsible for operating, maintaining, repairing and building our network of substations, power lines, underground cables and power poles, spanning 22,275 square kilometres across Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter Valley. We are continually upgrading the network to ensure we can keep providing a safe and reliable power supply to our customers now and well into the future.

Under Part 5 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 (EP&A Act), Ausgrid is delegated the authority to self-assess projects that are deemed Class 3, 4 or 5 activities. As an Authorised Network Operator, Ausgrid operates under relevant state and federal Government requirements, codes and guidance.

Awaba overhead powerline removal

Starting soon. Removing redundant powerlines between Awaba and Boolaroo to improve safety, with supporting works at Fassifern.

Belrose cable replacement

In progress. Improving network reliability by replacing ageing underground cables along Ralston Avenue Belrose.

Concord substation upgrade

In progress. Building a new switchroom, east of the existing substation, adjacent to the Sydney Trains T9 Northern Railway Line.

Darlinghurst electricity cable upgrades

Starting soon. Upgrading two major Darlinghurst electricity cables, improving network reliability and supporting future demand.

Flemington substation upgrade

In progress. Installing new control and protection systems, with all work contained onsite and minimal community impact.

Grid Scale BESS

In progress. Installing grid‑scale battery storage to support renewable energy, manage peak demand, and strengthen reliability.

Hunter-Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone (HCC REZ)

In progress. Upgrading network infrastructure to support the HCC REZ and deliver cleaner, more reliable and affordable power for NSW.

Lidcombe upgrade

In progress. Upgrading key feeder and transformer equipment in Lidcombe to strengthen the local network and improve reliability.

Milperra zone substation upgrade

Starting soon. Replacing switchgear and installing new equipment with an extension to the current Revesby substation building.

Strathfield cable project

In progress. Installing a new cable route between Burwood and Homebush to improve capacity and long-term reliability.

Surry Hills cable project

In progress. Installing a new cable route between Waterloo and Surry Hills to support growth and network resilience.

Tarro zone substation finalisation works

In progress. Completing minor civil works following the main upgrade at Tarro zone substation.

Upper Hunter Energy Park

Starting soon. Proposing a 66 kV overhead power line to connect the project to the Ausgrid electricity network at Scone.

Willoughby sub transmission substation

Starting soon. Preparing for a major upgrade of the Willoughby substation, including early works for new high‑voltage feeders.

Alexandria to Kingsford cable replacement

Completed. Installed a new cable route between Alexandria and Kingsford to improve network reliability.

Circular Quay improving electricity supply

Completed. Installed new 11kV cables along streets to support growth in Circular Quay and Barangaroo.

Macquarie substation

Completed. Upgraded the Macquarie Park substation with a new transformer bay to support a safer, more reliable local power supply.

Sydney Dalley Street substation decommission

Completed. Installed new conduits and electricity cables along Macquarie, Bridge, Hunter and Bent Streets.

Waterloo to Surry Hills underground cable replacement

Completed. Installed new 132kV underground cables to replace ageing cables and maintain a reliable local power supply.

Woolooware to Kurnell tower replacement

Completed. Assessed options for replacing towers between Woolooware and Kurnell, with further updates to follow.

Environmental assessment process
