Upgrading the network for a safer, more reliable energy future

Ausgrid is responsible for operating, maintaining, repairing and building our network of substations, power lines, underground cables and power poles, spanning 22,275 square kilometres across Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter Valley. We are continually upgrading the network to ensure we can keep providing a safe and reliable power supply to our customers now and well into the future.

Under Part 5 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 (EP&A Act), Ausgrid is delegated the authority to self-assess projects that are deemed Class 3, 4 or 5 activities. As an Authorised Network Operator, Ausgrid operates under relevant state and federal Government requirements, codes and guidance.

Awaba overhead powerline removal

In progress. Removing redundant powerlines between Awaba and Boolaroo to improve safety, with supporting works at Fassifern.

Flemington substation upgrade

In progress. Installing new control and protection systems, with all work contained onsite and minimal community impact.

Grid Scale BESS

In progress. Installing grid‑scale battery storage to support renewable energy, manage peak demand, and strengthen reliability.

Alexandria to Kingsford cable replacement

Completed. Installed a new cable route between Alexandria and Kingsford to improve network reliability.
