Request meter data

Customers with a meter connected to the Ausgrid network can request up to two years of metering data. This page guides you to request your own or make third party or multiple meter data requests.

You can use your meter data to understand when you use the most electricity during the day, identify any unusually high-usage days or check how much energy your solar system is exporting (if you have one). The data can be shared with energy apps or your retailer to help find a plan that better suits your usage.

Before you start your application

Please note: Before we email your meter data, we are required to verify your request. If the details you provide don’t match our records, or we can’t confirm you’re authorised to receive the information, we will not be able to process your request.

Information you need to provide

Before you begin, please have the following information ready:

  • Your National Metering Identifier (NMI) – you can find this on your electricity bill.
  • The surname or company name of the account holder (find this on your electricity bill)
  • The postcode
  • The dates you want data for. You must have been the account holder during this time.
    • You can request up to 2 years of metering data
    • The data must be from the past 2 years

If any of these details don’t match our records, we will not be able to provide the meter data. If we can’t confirm you’re authorised, please contact your electricity retailer instead.

For bulk requests:

  • Upload a CSV file including: NMI, postcode, name, start date (dd/mm/yyyy), end date (dd/mm/yyyy).
  • You don’t need to include a header row.

If you’re requesting data for someone else, you’ll need to provide:

  • A completed authorisation form for each NMI
  • The NMI(s) - National Metering Identifier numbers
  • The account holder’s name

We handle the information you provide to us in line with Ausgrid's Privacy Policy.

Please note that you’ll need to contact your electricity retailer if:

  • You have a question about your retail tariff, charges on your electricity bill or other enquiries about your electricity bill
  • You want to compare your bill with the data Ausgrid has provided

FAQs

Yes. Energy providers, consultants and other third parties can request data on your behalf, but they need your consent.

If you choose to use a third party, they will have to provide a signed consent form from you when they apply. Once we confirm the details, we’ll send the data to your authorised representative.

You may have to pay a fee if:

  • You request data more than 4 times in 12 months
  • You request data in a different format (as set out in AEMO meter data provision procedures)
  • A third party requests data for more than one customer.

We’ll let you know if any fees apply before we send the data.

If you’re requesting data from a single NMI, we will provide you the data within 10 business days after we receive a valid request. Requests for multiple NMIs may take up to 20 business days.

To submit a bulk request, you’ll need to upload a CSV file. For example, you can save an Excel spreadsheet or Google Sheet in .csv format.

The file should include:

  • NMI
  • Postcode
  • Name
  • Start date (dd/mm/yyyy)
  • End date (dd/mm/yyyy)

You don’t need to include a header row.

To avoid errors, make sure:

  • The file is saved as CSV
  • Each row has no more than the five required values (as shown in the example): NMI, postcode, name, start date and end date
  • Your file has no more than 500 requests
  • Each NMI is 10 or 11 digits starting with 4102 to 4104 or NCCC.
  • The start date is valid:
    • The start date is before the end date.
    • The total period is no more than 2 years
    • The data is from the past 2 years
  • The post code is correct and no more than 4 digits
  • Enter either the surname or the company name of the account holder. Find this on your electricity bill.

Please note: If you are a new customer, or using a new e-mail address, you will need to verify your email address. Check your inbox for a validation e-mail from Ausgrid after submitting your request.

The interval meter data shows how much electricity you use (or generate) at set time intervals throughout the day.

The data is shown in Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST).
If your tariff depends on time of use, you may need to adjust for Daylight Savings Time (AEDT).

This guide explains how your data is set out. It also describes the key fields to help you understand and use the data. You will receive a copy of this guide along with your meter data.
