Embedded networks

An embedded network is a way of supplying electricity to multiple homes or businesses on the same site through one main connection to the electricity network.

You’ll often see embedded networks in places like:

  • Apartment buildings and retirement villages
  • Shopping centres
  • Caravan parks and similar sites

Instead of each home or business having a direct connection to Ausgrid, the site has one main connection, and electricity is shared internally across the site.

How an embedded network works

In an embedded network:

  • The site owner manages the internal electricity network
  • The owner buys electricity from a retailer
  • Electricity is then supplied to residents or tenants on the site

The site owner is also responsible for maintaining the on‑site network and ensuring it operates safely.

Thinking about setting up an embedded network?

Embedded networks can be complex to set up and are subject to specific rules. Before starting, it’s important to:

  • Understand your responsibilities as a site owner
  • Make sure the arrangement complies with energy rules
  • Confirm whether approvals or exemptions are required

We recommend getting advice early to avoid delays or unexpected costs.
