Permanently Unmetered Supply (PUMS)

Connections for public facilities with predictable, low-energy loads.

Some public facilities use a very small and predictable amount of electricity and don’t need an electricity meter.
These are known as permanently unmetered supplies, or PUMS.

PUMS are usually used for simple public equipment such as:

  • Traffic lights
  • Small communication or monitoring equipment
  • Public lighting in specific locations

Is a PUMS right for your project?

A PUMS may be suitable if the electricity use:

  • Is very small
  • Comes from one connection point
  • Is consistent and easy to predict

Because there’s no meter, we need to be confident that electricity use can be reliably estimated.

If electricity use changes over time or varies significantly, a metered connection may be required instead.

Before you apply

Before submitting a PUMS request, you’ll need Ausgrid approval for the proposed installation.

This helps us confirm that:

  • The installation meets safety and network requirements
  • A meter really isn’t needed
  • The expected electricity use can be accurately assessed

In some cases, approval fees may apply. We’ll let you know before any charges are incurred.

How to apply for a PUMS connection

Request approval

Email the details of your proposed installation to: pums@ausgrid.com.au

When requesting approval, we’ll ask for clear information about:

  • Where the equipment will be located (public land only)
  • Why a standard metered connection isn’t practical or safe
  • How the electricity use will remain predictable over time

If your equipment is mounted on Ausgrid infrastructure (such as a pole), separate approval is also required.

Once approved, we’ll provide:

  • A PUMS customer reference
  • A load identification number

You’ll need these before continuing.
