Project overview

Ausgrid is installing a new cable from Transgrid’s substation in Burrows Road, Alexandria to Ausgrid’s substation in Anderson Street, Kingsford. These substations are connected by an existing fluid-filled underground 132kV cable that is approximately 40 years old and is nearing the end of its serviceable life.

Ausgrid are replacing the existing cable with a new underground cable. This project is part of a program to replace fluid-filled cables across our network.

Community consultation

Ausgrid has completed the process of engaging with key stakeholders to obtain early feedback on the preferred cable route.

Ausgrid started engaging with key stakeholders, such as the City of Sydney Council, in late-2021 to obtain early feedback on the preferred cable route.

Engagement with residents and businesses along and around the preferred cable route started in February 2022 when the first project newsletter was distributed. A copy of the newsletter can be found under ‘related documents’ at the bottom of this page.

On 24 February 2022, we held an online community information session to seek local information and community feedback on the preferred cable route. Interested community members were invited to the information session through our project newsletter.

The REF was publicly exhibited on Ausgrid’s website from 9th September to 10th October 2022. All feedback is being considered prior to the project being assessed for approval. Feedback received has been reviewed in late 2021 been considered in key project decisions, where possible.

Community feedback assists us in identifying potential issues and addressing them in our construction plans to minimise impacts.

Timeline

1

September 2025

Commissioning on the cables will begin with the connection cables through excavating underground joint bays and connecting cables along Anderson St and in the reserve on the corner of Campbell St and Bourke Rd.

2

Late 2025 - Early 2026

All permanent restoration has been completed with the majority of the cable route already restored.

What to expect during construction

Residents will be kept informed of all scheduled works through notification letters providing details on upcoming activities. The notification will include details on the work that will take place, any temporary impacts, and the steps being taken to minimise disruption throughout the work.

Planning pathway

Planning pathway Under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, Ausgrid is the determining authority for this project. As part of the REF process, an environmental assessment (known as a Review of Environmental Factors, or REF) has been prepared to assess the potential environmental impacts associated with the decommissioning of the existing cable and installation, operation, and maintenance of the new cable.
