Belrose cable replacement

Improving network reliability by replacing ageing underground cables along Ralston Avenue Belrose.
Project overview
Ausgrid is updating its network in Belrose. This critical infrastructure supplies electricity to an existing customer base of 48,000 within the Ku-ring-gai region which includes three hospitals and many schools. Between late 2025 and late 2027, Ausgrid will replace the existing underground 132kV sub-transmission cables between the Belrose Transition Point on Ralston Avenue and the intersection of Ralston Avenue and Elm Avenue, continuing through to the Transgrid Sydney East substation.
The scope of the project involves replacing the ageing fluid-filled cables along the current route. The new cables will be installed next to the existing cables, which means the works will remain in the existing underground corridor. This will minimise any additional impact on the surrounding area. Road and Rail Excavations Pty Ltd has been engaged as the contractor to carry out the cable installation works.
Community consultation
During early planning, the project team consulted with the landowner, the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council and the local community. Consultation included community information sessions held in Belrose, where the local community learned more about the proposed works and provided feedback.
As plans progressed, Ausgrid refined the project design. Throughout the planning process, newsletters were distributed to the local community, and we kept project information on this page up to date.
Timeline
Between late 2025 and late-2027, we will:
- Complete excavation work in stages
- Complete works within Transgrid’s Sydney East Substation
- Complete works inside the brick enclosure at the Ralston Lookout to connect replacement cables
- Connect cables to the existing overhead network
- Restore site to original condition
We expect the project to be completed in late 2027.
What to expect during construction
We will keep residents informed through notification letters outlining scheduled works, potential temporary impacts, and measures being taken to minimise disruption. Work began on the upgrades in January 2026 and will take place during standard construction hours, between 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays.
During construction, you may expect:
- Some noise and dust may be generated, but we will make every effort to keep this to a minimum.
- Temporary changes to traffic with traffic controllers onsite to help guide drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists safely around work areas.
- Parking and some footpaths will be temporarily restricted in and adjacent to work areas.
- Traffic flow will be maintained, whenever possible.
- Access to driveways and private property will be maintained at all times, unless arrangements are made in advance with residents.
- Materials may be stored along the route for a few days ahead of cable installation. Any materials will be secured with temporary fencing.
Your electricity supply will not be impacted while these works are carried out.
Project benefits
The current cables are reaching the end of their serviceable life and require replacement to safely provide energy to the community.
Next steps
Works are continuing work on the Belrose 9E1 & 9E2 Cable Project. We are nearing completion of the trenching stage of the project, with works expected to finish in September 2026. This is an important milestone ahead of installing the new underground 132kV power cables.
Once trenching is complete, we will begin restoring the areas affected by the works. Most areas will be permanently restored and returned to their original condition. However, two small sections will be temporarily restored because they contain an existing cable access point (CAT hole) that will need to be accessed for the next stage of works.
