Milperra zone substation upgrade
Starting soon.
Replacing switchgear and installing new equipment with an extension to the current Revesby substation building.
Project overview
Ausgrid is proposing an upgrade to the Milperra Zone Substation located at 48 Marigold Street, Revesby. The project is currently undergoing consultation under the State Environmental Planning Policy (Transport and Infrastructure) 2021.
The upgrade involves replacing existing switchgear, installing new equipment, and constructing an extension to the current Revesby substation building to support the updated infrastructure.
Project need
The Milperra Zone Substation has been supplying electricity to the community since 1966. The existing switchgear is now nearing the end of its serviceable life and requires replacement to maintain a safe and reliable electricity supply into the future.
Upgrading the substation will significantly improve our ability to meet both current and future electricity demand for homes and businesses in the area, while also helping to reduce the frequency and duration of power outages.
Timeline
October 2024 - Late 2025 (Stage 1)
- This stage will involve the construction of the switchroom building.
- After some minor enabling works are completed, excavation will be required for the new cable basement.
- This will be followed by peering and the formation of the new concrete slab for the building.
- The walls and roof of the building will then be constructed, followed by building fit-out works.
- External works will then be completed, with upgrades to the driveway and fencing.
Late 2025 to Late 2027 (Stage 2)
- This stage will first involve the equipping of the new switchroom with the replacement 11,000V switchgear.
- After the new switchgear is installed, electrical load will be transferred across from the old to the new switchgear.
- New 11kV cables will be installed to enable the electrical load transfers.
Late 2027 to Late 2028 (Stage 3)
- This stage will involve the decommissioning of the existing compound filled switchgear inside the existing switchroom.
- The equipment will be deenergized, made safe, removed from site and recycled.
Project approval process
Council notification
Ausgrid has consulted with the City of Canterbury‑Bankstown Council regarding the proposed upgrade of the Milperra Zone Substation. Council has advised that it has no objections to the proposed works.
Environmental assessment
Minimising the impact of our work on the environment and the local community is a key priority for Ausgrid. These works will be assessed under Part 5 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, and every effort will be made to reduce disruption during construction. Ausgrid will prepare a Summary Environmental Report (SER) and is the determining authority for this project. As part of the SER process, a range of environmental assessments will be undertaken, and appropriate mitigation measures will be implemented to minimise impacts on surrounding residents. Upon completion of the works, the ground surface and surrounding areas will be reinstated.
What to expect during construction
- Site investigations within and around the substation.
- Excavation works inside the zone substation to form a new cable basement.
- Construction of a switchroom building extension within the zone substation.
- Excavation and cable jointing works on the perimeter of the substation near Marigold Street to connect the new cables to the existing cables.
- The following equipment is anticipated to be used for excavation and construction works: piling rig, excavators, jackhammers, trucks, front-end loaders, and a mobile crane.
- As with any construction site, noise and dust may be generated, and we will work to minimise these impacts and complete the work as quickly as possible.
The planned work will not disrupt your power supply.
Construction hours would be between 7.00 am and 6.00 pm, Monday to Friday, and 8.00 am and 1.00 pm on Saturdays, unless otherwise advised. Please note that Ausgrid will liaise with adjoining land occupiers well in advance of any work commencing.
Equipping works inside the substation, as part of stage 3, will be primarily undertaken within the new building.
