Connecting large registered and non-registered embedded generators

Is your generator registered or non-registered?

Your connection pathway depends on the size of your generator and whether it needs to be registered with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO).

Non-registered embedded generators (200 kW up to 5 MW)

These connections are managed under Chapter 5A of the National Electricity Rules (NER) and apply to generators that do not need to be registered with AEMO.

Guidelines, processes and examples

Registered embedded generators (greater than 5 MW)

These connections follow Chapter 5 of the NER and apply to larger generators that must be registered with AEMO.

If you’re not sure which category applies to your project, you can still start with a preliminary enquiry and we’ll help guide you.

How the connection process works

While registered and non-registered generators follow different regulatory paths, the overall journey is similar:

  1. Make a preliminary enquiry
    1. This helps us understand your project and assess the best connection options.
  2. Receive technical and commercial requirements
    1. We’ll outline network requirements, studies, and any design information needed to progress.
  3. Review fees, contracts and policies
    1. Connection charges, model agreements and key policies are available in one place.
  4. Progress to a connection agreement
    1. Once requirements are met, we’ll work with you to finalise your connection agreement.
