Connecting solar, batteries and other embedded generation

We want to help you get your solar or other embedded generation connected as soon as possible.

We’re here to help you connect your solar panels, battery, or backup power smoothly and with confidence. Most customers won’t need to manage the technical details, your installer can do that for you.

Thinking about solar or a battery?

Most homes and businesses install solar panels, batteries, or both to:

  • Lower energy bills
  • Use more of their own power
  • Have backup power during outages

The good news: your installer usually does most of the work for you.

How the connection process works

1

Choose your system

Your solar or battery retailer will help you choose a system that suits your home or business and meets network requirements.

2

Application is submitted

Your installer submits a connection application to Ausgrid on your behalf.

3

We review it

We check the application to make sure your system can connect safely and reliably.

4

Installation

Once approved, your installer completes the installation using a licensed and accredited electrician.

5

Smart meter check

Some homes need a smart meter to accurately measure energy use and solar exports. If needed, your electricity retailer will organise this.

After your system is installed

After installation, you should receive a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work.  This confirms your system has been installed and tested safely. Always use a Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) accredited installer.

Some systems are inspected after connection. If we find a safety issue, we may disconnect the system until it’s fixed.

If you need help with:

  • A system that isn’t working properly
  • Changes to your solar or battery setup
  • Understanding your bills or meter data

Most common system types

Solar and batteries for homes and small businesses

  • These systems are usually straightforward
  • Many small systems are approved automatically
  • Your installer manages approvals and paperwork

Larger systems

  • Bigger systems may need extra checks
  • In some cases, additional fees apply
  • Your installer will explain this upfront

Backup generators

Some properties have generators for emergencies.

  • Backup‑only generators (used only during outages) usually don’t need approval
  • Generators that briefly connect to the network do need approval

Your electrician will know which type applies and what’s required.

Requirements for these systems are provided in section 8 of the NSW Service and Installation Rules and also in Australian Standard AS/NZS 3010

Grants and rebates

Solar for apartment residents (NSW)

Apartment buildings may be eligible for government grants to install shared solar systems.

  • Covers up to 50% of installation costs
  • Up to $150,000 per building
  • Limited funding is available

Your Owners Corporation or installer can help check eligibility and apply.
